OVERVIEW
Recognizing the increasingly important role technology plays in education and the work environment, St. Francis has implemented, over the last several years, a broad-based technology program to meet the needs of its student body. The entire campus has been networked with wired as well as wireless high speed Internet access. Each classroom has a computer station, which is linked to the school network and also a LCD Projection system used for demonstration purposes to enhance effective teaching. St. Francis has two computer labs dedicated to the students. The first lab located on the upper campus has 32 DELL Pentium 4 computers, an optical scanner, laser printers (one color) and a large screen projection system. The second lab located in the Fr. Lawrence Caruso Memorial Learning Center includes 31 DELL Quad Core computers, laser printers (one color) and a large screen projection system. Additionally, we have computer labs in the Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Geography classrooms equipped with Sony VAIO all-in-one PCs and Pentium 4 computers used by students for internet research and curriculum based software. The yearbook students are privileged to have their own computer lab, where they focus on designing using Adobe's InDesign software.
To ensure that our students are well prepared for a successful college education, the freshmen and sophomores are taught technology skills as part of their curriculum. All faculty teaching freshmen and sophomore classes are encouraged to introduce their students to strategic Internet research, and integrate these technology skills in their assignments and curriculum.
Many of our students at St. Francis have shown tremendous interest in and aptitude for computer technology. The faculty is committed to building that skill-set and co-operative assignments are given which require students to use a variety of software including Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Flash. Opportunities for students to master advanced computer skills are plentiful. The possibilities of integrating computer technology into their studies and co-curricular activities are bounded only by the imagination of our students. To facilitate student learning, the computer lab is open daily until 6 pm.
The technology department has implemented an electronic grading software which integrates with Edline, a web communication system for students, faculty, and parents. Each student is provided with 100 MB online storage on the Edline server, which can be accessed from any location with internet capability. The school subscribes to ‘Discovery Education’ for teacher resources.
