Service Hours
The purpose of the Christian Service Program is to teach the principle that Christian life goes beyond the mastery of concepts and beliefs taught in theology classes. Each grade level is required to perform at a minimum, the following number of service hours: Freshmen: 10 hours Sophomores: 20 hours Juniors: 30 hours Seniors: 40 hours All community service hours must be fulfilled in the public sector and must be formally verified by the Campus Ministry Office. Fifty percent of the Christian Service work must involve direct personal work, either one-on-one or within a group, to a non-profit agency. Performing liturgical functions in parish/church settings are considered personal hours. Non-personal service hours include services like walk/jog-a-thons for charitable causes, church youth group councils, parish festivals etc. Also included in this would be activities that involve service to St. Francis High School. Non-personal service hours may not exceed fifty percent of the minimum hour requirement. Beginning with the Class of 2008, one half of the Christian Service Hours must be completed through a campus ministry sponsored event. These events, which will include a faculty/staff member, are organized by the Christian Service Coordinator and are posted in the Campus Ministry Center. As part of the curriculum, all religion classes will include a reflection project or paper on the completed service. Finally, all Christian service must be performed at a non-profit, charitable organization.
